Summary of Snow Falling in the Spring, by Moying LiThe story opens up with Moying Li telling the readers about her lovely little life in her courtyard home with all of her family there at the very beginning of Cultural Revolution. She lives in the same area as all of her uncles, aunts, and cousins, along with her parents, grandparents, Lao Lao and Lao Ye, and little brother, DiDi. The children she lives with constantly get to play and be free in their courtyard, until one day when Chairman Mao makes her family put a big oven that melts metal in their courtyard. This oven imediately becomes enemy number one, until it seems to grow on her and she and all the children who play in the courtyard decide to help and watch the machine. Next, sparrows are made enemies because Chairman Mao says they eat the crops grown in China. In truth, the birds were killing the bugs that were killing the crops and now since the bugs could eat freely, all the crops started to die and China went into a terrible famine. Moying was able to escape this famine when she goes to a boarding school that allowed children to learn different languages. This is when Red Gaurds started to apear in the story. The Red Guards were teenagers who were strong followers of Chairman Mao who check the "list of accused," a list that says people's names who are against Chairman Mao, and make sure those people are punished. The headmaster of Moying's school hung himself after being bullied by the Red Guards. This is when Moying claims her childhood ended. Eventually, even most books were banned from all houses and schools. After this, everything in Moying's life went downhill. Will she be able to continue reading and learning as much as she wants to? Will her life ever go back to the way it was before the Cultural Revolution?

Loa Loa, Moying Li Grandmother, is Moying's hero becuase Lao Lao had an extremely difficult life. Her difficuly life started off at an extremely young age when she was only an infant and her mother caught pneumonia and died. Her father cherished her and made sure she was a smart girl with a good education, so she wasn't missing out on too much, even without a mother, especially becasue her aunt often came by bringing her goodies and, in a way, acted like her mother. Lao Lao's next struggle was when she was only four. At the time, every girl had their feet bound at age three or four because it was a sign of beauty and elegence to have small feet and walk slowly. Her aunt came by one day to bind her feet and the minute Lao Lao felt even the slightest bit of pain, she ran away and would not let her aunt touch her until her father told her she did not have to get her feet bound.
This video is about the Chinese tradition of foot binding. If you don't like feet, I advise you not to watch this.

Eventually her wish came true, but soon after, Lao Ye decided to built a skating rink with land that his friend ound that was open. The skating rink took massive amounts of money to built and open, money that he didn't have, so he had to barrow money from several different people. His rink was a big hit when it opened, but he refused to pay a fee to the police department when they asked him to. This made the police come into his skating rink on opening night, when it was full of people, and sabotage him and all of his customers. Because of this, his skating rink was destroyed and he no longer had customers, but many customers started to complain about items of theirs that went missing. All of the people that he barrowed money from suddenly wanted their money back as well.

Her next struggle was being a wife. She was a quintessential single girl who had money from a job she got, a car, got to travel, went on lots of dates, and never cooked, cleaned, or washed her clothes or the dishes because her Italian grandma always took care of her. Then when she got married, she got pregnant on her honeymoon and had to quit her job to take care of her children and her house. She also had to move to Fort Knox, Kentucky because that is where her husband worked and she had to start cooking and cleaning for her family. She missed her mom and friends terribly. She constanly prayed to get her through this sudden change in her life. Then becoming a mother was another large obstacle she had to overcome. She went into motherhood not knowing how to be a mother, nurse, or really raise kids. Being in Fort Knox also made things harder because none of her friends or family members lived there and she had trouble making friends, especially ones who could help her. The things that got her through the first few years of motherhood were prayer and her mom. She improved in being a mother as the years went on.

    ...
and Culture in AmericaThe Art and Culture today in America can compare to the art and culture in China in the novel, Snow Falling in the Spring. For example, plastic surgery compares to footbinding, matchmaking compares to dating shows, their popular music compares to popular music in America today, and their New Years that they still celebrate today compares to the New Years that America celebrates.
A big part of culture in America that compares to footbinding, is plasic surgery. Plastic surgery takes the bones, muscles, and fat of humans and either removes them, replaces them, or puts them at a different part of the body. The article "The Plastic Surgery of a Model Needs to Look Like a Barbie" states that "every day a new plastic surgery promise emerges: scooped-out backs, rear-end lifts, sculpted kneecaps. If it's possible, it's suddenly necessary." This article also says that getting the body of a barbie is "anatomically impossible. So why are we still trying for it?" It doesn't make sense that people believe they need to be twenty pounds lighter or their cheek bones have to be an inch higher in order for them to be pretty. In these ways, Americans are destroying their bodies just as badly as Chinese people are when they bind their feet. Maybe Americans are still able to walk briskly after plastic surgeries, however plastic surgeries alter the way people look so greatly that some people are unrecognizable after plastic surgeries. The Article, "Celebrities Before and After Plastic Surgery," has more pictures of celbrities who have had plactic surgery.

in the SpringSpringThe art and culture in the novel is very differnt from the culture today in and out of China, especially the practice of footbinding, the kind of matchmaking they did and the popular music. One thing that hasn't changed that is still popular in China's culture today is the New Year celebration.
In the novel, Snow Falling in the Spring, by Moying Li, one thing that sets aside China's culture from everyone else's is that China had footbinding for a long period of time. When Moying's Lao Lao was a little girl, the book says, "it was a custom at the time for girls, aged three or four, to have their feet bound- a traditional ideal of beauty and submission, compelling women to walk slowly" (24). This is one cultural tradition that China had. This footbinding process was very painful; according to the article, "Painful Memories for China's Footbinding Survivors," from the National Public Radio, women were "binding their feet to turn them into the prized 'three-inch golden lotuses.'" The article also reports that a woman name "Zhou Guizhen says 'At that time everybody had bound feet. If you didn't, you'd only be able to marry a tribesman from an ethnic minority.'" To read more about the process of footbinding, the consequences of footbinding and more accounts from women who had their feet bound, click here and read the article.
